Skylight: A Fusion of Function and Traditional Chinese Artistry

Kris Lin's Award-Winning Design Illuminates Sales Center with Caisson-Inspired Skylights

Skylight, a sales center project in Yiwu, China, masterfully designed by Kris Lin, marries functionality with traditional Chinese architectural artistry. The design, inspired by the ancient caisson patterns, addresses the challenge of insufficient indoor lighting while adding a unique aesthetic appeal. This article delves into the design's inspiration, unique properties, realization, and the challenges overcome during its creation.

Skylight's design is a testament to the timeless beauty of traditional Chinese architecture. The skylight, inspired by the caisson patterns, serves as a functional and aesthetic solution to the challenge of insufficient indoor lighting. Caisson ceiling, a unique decorative part of the indoor ceiling in traditional Chinese architecture, symbolizes the communication between heaven and mankind, reflecting the aesthetic value of the Chinese people.

Despite the project's complexity, the design team, led by Kris Lin and Anda Yang, relied on traditional materials and technologies to complete the project within a limited budget. This approach not only ensured cost-effectiveness but also preserved the authenticity of the caisson-inspired design.

The project, located in the core area of Choujiang Street in Yiwu City, China, started in January 2020 and was completed in October 2020. The design team faced the challenge of poor indoor lighting due to the absence of a large glass curtain wall on the building's exterior. The solution was to introduce natural light through the skylight, thereby illuminating the interior space.

The design team's research into the structure of traditional Chinese caisson architecture played a crucial role in the project's success. They selected the well shape structure form, abstractly deformed it, and combined it with the skylight to let light into the room. The ever-changing light and shadow not only solve the lighting problem but also evoke awe and yearning for space.

Skylight's unique blend of function and traditional Chinese artistry earned it the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
